The Mind and Soul Choir was founded in 2006 to promote well-being through singing. The group currently has between 30 and 40 members but has worked with 100s more since it began. In the last sixteen years, the choir has performed at the Wigmore Hall, South Bank Centre, Royal Opera House, the Globe, among others. The professional Musical Director is Nicola Wydenbach.
What makes the group unique is that the singers rehearse every Wednesday from 6 to 7pm at the Maudsley Hospital itself, one of the UK’s leading mental health hospitals. The choir is totally non-auditioned, free for users and open to staff, service users past and present, friends, carers, family, and members of the hospital’s local community. We have members from the local area from Dulwich to Brixton. Because of the ongoing support from the Beckenham Theatre Trust we have been able to continue running our weekly session, take our work on the wards and have written songs for our Songbook for our 20th Anniversary.
